Why cmpli Exists
Small businesses deserve better than being told to "figure out security" with tools built for someone else.
Here's what I kept seeing
Small business owners know security matters. They hear about breaches on the news. Their insurance company is asking questions. A client wants to know what they're doing to protect data. They get it.
But when they go looking for help, everything they find is built for companies with dedicated IT teams and six-figure budgets. The language is confusing, the tools are overwhelming, and the advice basically amounts to "hire a specialist."
So they do nothing. Or they check a few boxes on a spreadsheet and hope for the best. Not because they don't care, but because nobody gave them a real place to start.
That's the gap I wanted to close.
So I built something different
cmpli is a security workspace for small businesses. Not a scanner, not a certification tool, not something that tries to turn you into an IT professional. It's a place where you can figure out where you stand, keep track of what matters, and take practical steps to get better over time.
You answer plain-language questions about your business. You track your vendors, your backups, your key contacts. When you need help understanding something, you ask Niko, an AI advisor that actually knows your setup and explains things without the jargon.
When your insurer asks about your security practices, you have a real answer. When a client wants proof, you can share a verified profile. When something happens in the news that could affect your business, you hear about it in words that make sense.
That's it. No scare tactics, no upsell pressure, no guilt trips about what you should have done last year. Just a clear picture of where you are and what to do next.
What we believe
Security shouldn't require a translator
If you can't explain it in plain language, you don't understand it well enough. Every question, every alert, every recommendation in cmpli is written the way a normal person talks. If you wouldn't say it to someone over coffee, it doesn't belong in the product.
"I'm not sure" is always a valid answer
Most security tools penalize uncertainty. We think honesty is more useful than guessing. If you don't know whether your backups are encrypted, saying so is the first step to finding out. We'd rather you be honest about a gap than confident about a lie.
Progress beats perfection
You're never going to wake up one morning and be "done" with security. It's an ongoing thing. What matters is that you're moving in the right direction. Turning on MFA today is better than building a perfect security plan next year. We'd rather you do three things well than stress about fifty.
Nobody should feel stupid for asking
The security industry has a bad habit of making people feel dumb. If you don't know what a DKIM record is, that's fine. You shouldn't have to. Our job is to tell you what matters and help you handle it, not quiz you on acronyms.
Small businesses are worth protecting
43% of cyberattacks target small businesses, but almost all the tools and services are built for enterprises. That math doesn't work. Small businesses are the backbone of their communities. They deserve real tools, not watered-down versions of enterprise products.
Who this is for
cmpli is for the business owner who knows security matters but doesn't have an IT team to handle it. The office manager who just got asked to "look into our security situation." The accountant who needs to answer insurance questions about data protection. The consultant juggling ten small clients who all need help but can't afford enterprise tools.
You don't need to be technical. You don't need a background in IT. You just need to care enough to spend a few minutes getting organized. cmpli handles the rest.
Where we're headed
We're still early. There's a lot more we want to build, and we're listening to every piece of feedback we get. The roadmap is shaped by real conversations with real business owners, not hypothetical enterprise features.
If you've been putting off "the security thing" because it feels like too much, I get it. That's exactly why this exists. Start free, poke around, and see if it clicks. No pressure, no sales calls, no countdown timers.
Just a workspace that helps you take care of something important, at your own pace.
